Kerala: 10,000 Primary Schools to be equipped with Free WiFi

In a one of its kind initiative in the country, the government schools in Kerala are expected to undergo an Internet Revolution. It is estimated that at least 10,000 upper and lower primary schools in Kerala will get updated with internet facilities w.e.f. 1 November.



These schools will be now equipped with a broadband connection having a speed of 2Mbps. The data limit for the same is set to Unlimited which has been powered by BSNL. This initiative is a part of “IT@school project”, initiated by the IT branch of Education Branch.

Prior to this, the project has been giving internet connection to approx 5000 High schools and other educational institutes since 2007.

“With the access to broadband by the primary institutes as well, the state’s Broadband connection to the school is now expected to cover 100% schools. This is indeed the largest and one of its kinds in the country”, said K Sadath, Director of the “IT@School” project

C Ravindranath, the education minister said that this marks the commencement of the progress and up gradation of ICT infrastructure in lower and primary sections of the school. The training for all the teachers is expected to start from tomorrow.

The project will monitor the use and training to prevent misuse of the internet. Proper check at regular intervals will be facilitated to prevent any unwanted circumstances. Education and training for the same will be imparted to the staff. This will ensure complete cyber safety as well. BSNL is expected to complete at least 40% of the installation of connections before December and the remaining before March.

BSNL has also planned to bring up a unique call center and web portal facilities. This will be to address the issues related to internet connectivity provided in the schools. This will enable better service quality as any issues will be attended on a priority basis.
