Recruitment through GATE 2017 on the rise

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) stands as a pan-India examination in engineering and science sector. The test is conducted by one of the Indian Institute of Technology(s) and Indian Institute of Science on rotation basis, on the behalf of the HRD Ministry. The GATE score reflects a candidate’s relative performance level and his/her comprehensive understanding of subjects.

GATE 2017GATE score is used by Higher Education institutes for admissions to post-graduate programmes in engineering/ technology. For past few years, another section of opportunities has made its way for GATE aspirants. Several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have started using GATE score to recruit graduate engineers in entry-level positions. Indian Oil Corporation was the first PSU that used GATE score to recruit graduate engineers and thereafter, many of them started using the GATE qualification as the criteria for filling vacant positions.

The decision has significantly helped PSUs to fill vacancies as they are now left over with only conducting interviews and not the exams. On the other hand, in our country, where a government job holds immense popularity, this process has simplified the engineering graduates’ life as now they focus on one single exam – GATE and prepare only for the PSU’s interview.

The next GATE exam – GATE 2017 would be conducted by the IIT Roorkee and the application process has ended 10 days ago. The exam is scheduled to be held on February 4, 5, 11 & 12, 2017. Considering the past few year trends, it is expected that around 8-9 lakh candidates have applied for GATE 2017.

The GATE exam is know for its competitiveness level where only around 15 to 16 percent candidates manage to qualify it. The cut-off marks are set by the exam organising institute based on the candidates’ performance. The exam is conducted in 23 disciplines and hence the cut-offs also differ for subjects. Usually, the qualifying marks for OBC candidates come around 90% of general category’s qualifying marks, while for SC/ST candidates, it comes around 2/3rd of general category cut-off. The candidates qualifying the exam with good marks are invited by PSUs to appear for direct interviews, however, the candidates must have applied for the vacancies separately.

For this year, several companies have notified the recruitments through GATE exam, while some companies are yet to announce the vacancies. Of all PSUs, HAL, BHEL, GAIL, PSPCL, HPCL, Indian Oil Corporation, BPCL, NTPC, NBCC, NHPC, Air India Limited, Airports Authority of India, BEL, BSNL, Food Corporation of India, ONGC, Rites and Steel Authority of India are some major organisations. The candidates are advised to go through the official websites of these organisations for more updates on the recruitment process.
