BSNL on expansion mode

The Tamil Nadu circle of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is on an expansion mode and it has floated tenders for an estimated cost of Rs. 300 crore to upgrade its existing towers to next generation technology of communication, said V. Sundar, Principal General Manager, Coimbatore SSA, here on Wednesday.

BSNL has planned to install 566 4G mobile communication towers across Tamil Nadu. The Coimbatore Secondary Switching Area (SSA) will get its due share in this. As of now, the district has 464 3G and 632 2 G towers, Mr. Sundar said.
Ten exchanges in Coimbatore SSA will be migrated to Next Generation Network (NGN) technology soon. Nearly 39,000 customers will benefit if NGN was implemented. Under the NGN technology, customers can enjoy All India CENTREX facility, better quality of broadband,facility to connect 60 numbers through audio or video conferencing service and can avail of services like Limited Fixed Mobile Technology (LFMT) and Fixed Mobile Conference (FMC) in addition to the existing ‘Add on’ services, Mr. Sundar said.
The Coimbatore SSA alone has around 8 lakh prepaid, 45,000 post paid mobile customers and 1.42-lakh landline customers. On an average 18,000 to 19,000 new prepaid mobile customers are added every month. BSNL was gaining due to mobile number portability (MNP). If one customer goes out, two new customers get added in to BSNL network through number portability option. As many as 6,250 customers joined BSNL through MNP as against the 3,014 who migrated to other networks from April to July this year in Coimbatore SSA, Mr. Sundar said.
When asked about the progress of linking Aadhar with Electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) facility, Mr. Sundar said that 70 per cent of the customers were yet to complete the mandatory linking.
