New Delhi: Telecom minister Manoj Sinha said the target date
for the completion of the national optical fibre network (NOFN) or
Bharat Net project is 31 December.
He also set a target for the BSNL employees to work towards raising the market share to 15% from the current 10.4% in the industry.
“The work for NOFN project should be completed by 31 December 2016 instead of 31 March 2017 and this is a challenge for BSNL. This date cannot be extended to 1 January 2017. We cannot miss the data revolution as future generations will curse us, “ Sinha said.
“I urge all the employees responsible for functioning of BSNL to work towards attaining a market share of 15% as against the current 10.4% and also set the target by when this can be achieved. No other operator has the strength that BSNL holds and despite such dedicated and equipped staff, we are only at 10.4%,” Sinha said, adding that promoting landlines should be given special attention since the focus of consumers is shifting from landline to mobile phones.
“Lower pricing plans for voice and data can be successful for shorter time periods, but in the long run only quality of service matter and the focus should be on improving the quality,” he commented on BSNL’s Rs.49 plan, which was launched on 15 August 2016 as a promotional plan for 90 days and offers unlimited free calling between 9 pm to 7 am.
In a strong message for employees at BSNL, the minister called for removal of employees who fail to show positive results and meet targets, and suggested performance related pay for BSNL. He also assured full support from the telecom department to BSNL.
Telecom secretary J.S. Deepak also said that in the last 14-15 months, there has been double port-in for BSNL than port-outs, which is a good sign. BSNL chairman Anupam Srivastava added that BSNL will never fail to release interconnection points to any operator as customers must not suffer.
State-run BSNL has started earning operating profits this year for the first time in seven year.
