PF arrears recovery better

Calcutta, March 16: The regional provident fund office has improved its recovery of dues just days before the end of the financial year.
A shot in the arm has come in the form of a Rs 10-crore recovery from BSNL, which has helped to bring down the dues from Rs 40 crore at the start of the year to around Rs 28 crore.

EPFO officials in Calcutta said that the Bengal circle of the state owned telecom major failed to pay dues on time for the period between March 2001 and November 2016. As per the EPF Scheme, the employers have to clear assessed provident fund within 15 days from the scheduled date of payment. If an establishment fails to pay the dues on time penalty is also applicable.

A notice was issued by EPFO office giving complete details and monthwise calculation of the dues and BSNL was also given reasonable opportunity of being heard, the EPFO said in a statement.

"Many employers opt for taking the legal route when a notice is given relating to recovery. But in this case, after due examination of records at their end, BSNL found the statement of EPFO outlining the details of delay is correct. They have accordingly cleared the dues. Employers should pay their dues on time to avoid penalty," said Rajib Bhattacharya, regional provident find commissioner.

Sources said the BSNL dues might have occurred when the PSU shifted from general provident fund to employee provident fund.
