BSNL to invest Rs.4,300 crore to set up nationwide Wi-Fi hotspot network

BSNL, the state-run telecom company has announced its plans to go on a spending spree to increase the number of Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. According to BGR India, the company has earmarked more than Rs.4,300 crore that would be used to set up more than 75,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the country. BSNL plans to spend this money in the current fiscal and plans to have all the hotspots ready by the end of the next fiscal year.

BSNL’s plans for these hotspots were revealed by Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha.
“BSNL presence is must for healthy competition in the industry and benefit of consumers. They have installed around 5,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, going to install 35,000 more Wi-Fi hotspots this fiscal and planning another 35,000 to provide quality service to consumers,” he said.
He further went on to claim that BSNL has been very competitive when it came to offers – and also indirectly hinted at Jio’s arrival being a catalyst in the Indian market.
“If we see data usage of past few days in the country, I believe we may have surpassed data usage level by consumers in the US and China. People were paying earlier Rs 200 per GB for data and now they are getting 1GB for around Rs 10. This is good for consumers,” Sinha added.
According to Anupam Shrivastava, the chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, the company has already installed more than 5,000 hotspots across the country and that more such hotspots are on the way this very year.
“L&T has won contract for rolling out 20,000 wifi hotspots and HFCL will install another 15,000 hotspots. We have provision for 100 per cent expansion of wifi hotspots in next fiscal too but the cost will be less.”

Are you looking forward to using BSNL’s countrywide network if WI-Fi hotspots?
