Aircel announced today that it will offer unlimited calling across all networks via a recharge pack costing Rs 449 with a validity for 29 days. The pack will however be available in UP East circle only.
Apart from this, Aircel has another unlimited calling plan with a twist. The plan dubbed as “Jodi Offer” will offer new subscribers unlimited calling between two Aircel SIM cards for the first three months. Means customers can make unlimited calling only between two newly purchased Aircel numbers.
The ‘Jodi Offer’ will offer Aircel to Aircel local and STD calls at a different rate of 15p per minute; Aircel to local and STD on other network for 25 per minute and 500 MB of 3G data for three months capped at 167MB per month.
Earlier, reports said that BSNL is also “planning” to provide “free voice calling” plans to counter competition from Jio. The will however be capped for 2G and 3G cellular users and there was no exact confirmation or timeline for the launch.

How useful is this?
If Aircel is looking to counter Jio’s offer of free unlimited calling (billed from data balance) with the ‘Jodi pack’, and on board more new subscribers, then this plan is obviously of limited or zero value to new customers who will anyway end up making calls to customers outside Aircel. This will not stop users from favoring Jio over Aircel.
Secondly, the unlimited calling pack for Rs 449 seems to be right on track but the pack is available in UP Circle East as of now. We asked Aircel whether they are planning to extend this offer to more circles; a spokesperson replied “This is only for UP East”. We get that offering unlimited calling in all service areas might create congestion, but testing unlimited calling in just one service area will still not stop existing Aircel customers from porting to Jio and or getting a new Jio SIM.

Aircel to provide 5GB data for Rs 333
Aircel also announced that it will offer 5GB of 3G data for Rs 333, with a validity of just 28 days, and it claims that this is aimed at “high data users”. This translates to Rs 66 per GB, while note that its new competitor Jio is providing data at Rs 50 per GB.
This pack is again is limited to Andhra Pradesh and Telengana circles.
