Bringing alive the feel of Onam via music

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: What can be a better way to usher in the harvest festival of Onam than to bring alive nostalgic memories of festive frenzy and the beauty of the occasion through melodious tunes? For Suraj, this onam has been an occasion to celebrate just that. Music composer S R Suraj is  enjoying a dream come true moment this Onam season.
The composer who has done the music for his second music album has managed to  get a group of noted playback singers from veterans like P Jayachandran and Unni Menon to new generation singer Vijay Yesudas  to lend voice to his songs.
His second venture is an Onam music album titled ‘Ponnavani Pattukal’ which he has made with his friends Vinod P Ambady, Arun Chand and Aravind V K under the banner of Ambady Visual Media. The album which has around twelve songs sung by playback singers Gayathri Ashok, Mridula Varier, Sudeep Kumar, Madhu Balakrishnan, Unni Mukundan and Vijay Yesudas lending their voices, apart from a track sung by Suraj himself, was released recently in the city. The album was released by Music 24/7.
Suraj who is a BSNL employee, who has also been learning classical music in his leisure time, sees music as a passion. His idea for coming up with an Onam album had been the less number of the same. The trend of festive music albums is seeing a major change, agrees Suraj. He states, “ We thought of coming up with this album, knowing it could be a risky affair. There is now very less market for such music albums, not because there are no songs. The reason is just that it is now hard to hear music which has the ability to touch our hearts or stay fresh in our memories. Having grown up listening to Dasettan’s evergreen songs, I feel we need to give more such original music to people.” His first project was for the short film titled ‘Theeram Tedi’, produced by Ambady Visual Media, composing the music for the same.
Winding up, Suraj says, “ Music is more than a part time hobby. It’s a passion for me as well as my friends, who want to see more good and melodious music.”
