The success of Reliance Jio has forced existing operators to bend over and cut their long standing data rates in order to stay competitive.
BSNL's response: Data ar Rs 1/GB
Even state run BSNL has had to respond and has announced that it will soon launch an unlimited wireline broadband plan in order to compete with Reliance Jio.
The new 'Unlimited BB 249' plan allows users to enjoy high speed broadband at just Rs 1 per GB of download.
BSNL in a statement said, "BSNL is going to launch a very cost-effective and affordable unlimited Broadband plan 'Experience Unlimited BB 249′ from September 9, 2016,"
What's the catch?
In order to get the claimed rate of Rs 1 per GB, a user will have to somehow, by hook or by crook, use all the 300GB of data per month. The 249 Rs plan offers a user the chance to download upto 300 GB of data, so obviously if the user uses less than 249GB, then the cost will be more than a rupee per GB.
Availability and Speed
The plan will offer 2 Mbps of speed and will be available from Spetember 9, 2016.
This comes hot on the heels of BSNL launching free unlimited calls for its subscribers. BSNL customers can now make unlimited voice calls from any BSNL landline to any mobile network/landline on every Sunday.
The company already offers BSNL landline customers free voice calls to any other landline between 9PM and 7AM.
Jio: Shaking the Indian telecom space
It is great to see a new entrant in the telecom space shake up the market and force competitors to pull up their socks. At the end of the day, capitalism dictates that more the competition, the better it is for users in terms of price and services.
We have to wait and see whether this momentum for Reliance Jio lasts and if it is able to seize a tangible share of the market by next year.
