Communications minister Manoj Sinha has asked BSNL to give a roadmap
and timeline for increasing its market share to 15 percent from the
present level of 10.4 percent.
Addressing a gathering of senior BSNL officials at its
headquarters, Sinha said that the state PSU has missed the voice bus as
it lost most mobile customers to its competitors. BSNL shouldn't miss
the data revolution, which is happening worldwide, he added.
He said that the PSU had the largest telecom network, a dedicated
cadre of officials and most advanced technology. "There is no reason why
we shouldn't have an ambitious target."
For even the telecom sector to grow and have enough competition, it is important for BSNL to stand firmly in the market.
He appreciated the plan 49 brought out by BSNL in which it is
offering free calls between 9 pm to 7 am to landline customers. He,
however, said that this may be successful in a short run. For the longer
run, BSNL must focus on quality of service and better customerr
support, he said.
Sinha ordered BSNL to complete the phase 1 of BharatNet (NOFN)
project by December end, through which 1 lakh village panchayats have
to be connected through the optical fibre network.
