The city Corporation will soon launch Wi-Fi hotspots for
the public at 12 locations. The local body has tied up with Bharat
Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to set up the facility. Access to high
speed Internet through these hotspots will be free for 15 minutes after
which a nominal fee will be levied.
The hotspots are
being set up initially in the Corporation’s zonal offices, health circle
offices and a few other locations. Internet access will be available
within 100 metres of these points. The hotspots are now set up at the
Corporation’s main office and the Vizhinjam Kazhakuttam, Attipra,
Vattiyurkavu and Nemom zonal office.
The other
locations currently available are at the Corporation’s health circle
offices at Uttarayanam Guest House, Sasthamangalam, Medical College,
Sreekandeswaram, Nanthencode, near SMV School and Palayam.
“Private
sector companies, including Reliance Jio, had approached us with the
plan for Wi-Fi hotspots. But we decided that the Corporation should
align with a public sector company and hence opted for BSNL,” said
Corporation Mayor V.K. Prasanth.
Fifteen minutes of
access to Internet from any of these locations will be free, after which
recharge coupons can be taken from the Corporation main office and
zonal offices.
The lowest coupons are priced Rs.10,
which provide 100 MB of data at a speed of 10 MB per second. Coupons
priced Rs.30 are valid for seven days and provide 300 MB of data at 10
MB per second.
For those using a BSNL connection,
access will be completely free. Around 200- 300 users can simultaneously
connect to each of the hotspots at a time.
BSNL had,
in association with Quadgen Wireless Solutions, implemented similar
projects in several villages in North and Central India.
The
Mayor will inaugurate the Wi-Fi hotspots on Wednesday morning at the
Corporation Office. BSNL Kerala circle Chief General Manager R.Mani and
others will be present.
